Considering taking the plunge — dining at a communal table?
S. Irene Virbilia,Los Angeles Times restaurant critic's recent communal dining experience may be
just the encouragement you need.
Here are excepts from her 12/3/06 review of Canelé in Atwater Village — (323) 666-7133 — 3219 Glendale
Boulevard:
" . . . I end up sitting at the communal table in the front window. Twice it was because there was
no other table available and my friends and I didn't want to wait.
But now I tend to gravitate to one end of the broad farmhouse table set with vases filed with herbs. I like sitting
down to dinner without feeling locked into a tiny two-top. Sometimes you see familiar faces. But mostly you don't
and that's a big part of the appeal — the sense of a shared experience with new acquaintances.
Someone will wonder what it is you're eating or ask for a recommendatiom. Someone else will lean close conspiratorially
and tell you to order the heirloom tomatoes with olives, cucumbers and feta. I do. And it is delicious . . .
Because the communal table sitters tend to be self-selected group, people are often more sociable and they linger.
Over wine. Over coffee. Over the beguiling buena chica cheesecake.
From this comforting wooden table on the sidelines, you can take in the entire scene at Canelé."
Yet another reason to frequent restaurants offering communal table dining?
A Jerry Seinfeld sighting at Le Pain Quotidien, a chain of restaurants known for their large communal
dining tables:
"Seinfeld's having coffee off Broadway in New York — not in a greasy spoon like the coffee shop where
Jerry, George and Elaine kvetched abut the minutiae of their lives, but in a slightly Frenchified place called
Le Pain Quotidien. It means 'daily bread,' but somehow 'quotidian' seems right for Seinfeld, 52, a guy whose
entire career is built on his bemused study of everyday life." — Newsweek — December 25, 2006
